Trailer for your Weekend: Boyhood
Richard Linklater, through his ‘Before’ series and other films, has proven himself to be a pretty singular talent in contemporary filmmaking. Even from him though, the forthcoming Boyhood (2014) looks like a pretty remarkable and unique piece of work. The film was shot over twelve years, literally chronicling one guy’s childhood. I try not to get too excited following trailers. But bloody hell this one makes me want to see this film. The trailer just works, combining a great choice of song with snippets from the film that give you a flavour of what to expect without ruining it for you. I would have to say it is probably my most anticipated film of the year now (ok maybe Godzilla is in front). Let’s hope the film meets that anticipation. Anyone else excited for this, or even better been lucky enough to catch this at a festival screening?

Trailer for your Weekend: They Came Together
Woah almost totally forgot a trailer for this weekend. Here it is, though don’t get me wrong, simply based on what is on display below They Came Together (2014) looks pretty woeful. It sort of seems like a really obvious approach to material that needs a little panache and originality to really succeed. But there is one simple reason why I will still be keen to see it when it comes out: Amy Poehler. If you are a fan of Parks and Recreation (if you haven’t seen it, please give it a try), then you will know that Poehler is possibly the best comedic performer working today. Any movie she is in, not to mention one rocking a reasonable supporting cast headed by Paul Rudd, has a great chance to be hilarious. So here is hoping Poehler and co can make this way better than the strange, bad, trailer suggests.

Trailer for your Weekend: Palo Alto
James Franco is a busy and multi-talented dude. He will soon be starring in Palo Alto (2014), an adaptation of his own collection of short stories directed by Gia Coppola. Films based on short story collections seem to miss the mark a fair bit, but this seems to have a fair bit of promise. I am a fan of Franco and Emma Roberts has impressed me in a couple of things as well. The trailer looks good and it may manage to bring something original to the teen, coming of age film which would be really refreshing. Who knows how it will turn out, but at this stage, I am pretty keen. Thoughts all?

Trailer for your Weekend: I Origins
I never got around to seeing Another Earth (2011). It was an intriguing concept, though from what I have heard, it was perhaps not delivered as well as it could be. Well the folk behind that film are back with I Origins (2014). I’m kinda digging this trailer. Right from the get go it is intriguing and appears to be a sort of mish mash of philosophy, science and love story. It may end up trying to be too indie cool for its own good. But if it can be made with a genuine sensibility to it, this could be one to keep an eye out for. The whole notion of belief in science above all and at the exclusion of everything else is something interesting for art to explore, so hopefully this can do it in a way that does those pretty heavy ideas justice.

Trailer for your Weekend: Hercules
I am a massive fan of the Rock. I think he is probably the most charismatic action star going around these days and can lift films that otherwise would be terrible, to at least watchable levels. But after watching the first teaser trailer for Hercules (2014), I fear even the huge former WWE star may be out of his league because this film looks terrible. When you can’t even make a minute and a half of a film watchable then you are in a bit of trouble. Who knows, perhaps the Rock can save this from being a miserable dirge of crummy CGI beasts, but I hold out little hope. Anyone a little more positive than me?

Trailer for your Weekend: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
So the trailer for the upcoming Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) dropped this week. And despite myself I can’t help but be a little excited by this. It will almost certainly be another terrible ordeal of ‘Bayhem’ and it seems impossible it could possibly be a patch on the live action original that is so beloved by me and many others. But as someone who loves the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I can’t help but be just a little bit psyched. Not so much the appearnce of the CGI turtles which is a little terrible. But because o f the big budget approach that is being taken with the property. There is an off chance that this will be loads of big budget fun with plenty of Turtles attitude. I will cling to that faint hope anyways. Thoughts all?

Trailer for your Weekend: The Double
After stumbling upon the trailer for Enemy (2013) last week, I thought this week I would share the trailer for the rather more hyped doppelganger film to be released this year, Richard Ayoade’s The Double (2014). I have not really seen any of Ayoade’s work but plenty of people are really keen on his artistic vision. In terms of the cast, Jesse Eisenberg rarely impresses me, but I think Mia Wasikowska is one of the best actresses working at the moment and I enjoy her performances even in films that I don’t care for such as Stoker (2013). As for this film, I am a little pessimistic. It looks a little weird tonally and actually reminded me of Tery Gilliam’s Brazil (1985). That kind of shtick is difficult to maintain over the course of a whole film. Having said that, the central notion is one that could make a great film, being a great mix of the relateable and the fantastical. Imagine what you would go through if all of a sudden your doppelganger showed up as a colleague. Hopefully the director can take it some interesting places.

Trailer for your Weekend: Enemy
Have to love a trailer that opens with the line “you don’t go to the movies do you?” From there the trailer sets up an intriguing premise, that could be spectacular if done well. A man, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, sees his doppelganger in a film and sets about finding as much out about his onscreen double as possible. Hopefully they take this some interesting places and don’t just coast on the quality of the premise. Very cool to catch a glimpse of the great Isabella Rossellini in this as well.

Trailer for your Weekend: Harmontown
It’s a long weekend in these parts, so I am a little behind. Here is this week’s trailer though. Dan Harmon is a pretty controversial figure. Most would agree that he is somewhat of a genius. At its best, Community is about as inspired as TV comedy gets. But Harmon has also had his share of personal demons and explosive professional relationships. Harmontown is a doco that will take a look at the man’s issues. It looks like an intriguing project, especially for fans of Harmon like myself. My only concern is that it does seem to be a project managed by Harmon and his crew. So let’s hope that the portrait is pretty warts and all. I really like what the trailer is laying down though, from the interesting talking heads right at the start on. What do you guys think, both of Harmon’s work and this film?

Trailer for your Weekend: Tammy
If you’re going to use the phenomenal “Gangster’s Paradise” by Coolio in a trailer, you have to respect that track with some cool material. I have to say, I kind of like how it is used in this teaser for the upcoming Melissa McCarthy vehicle Tammy (2014). I am a massive fan of McCarthy’s, she is one of the top few film comedians working these days. Hopefully the film does not entirely consist of jokes about her size, of which there are a couple in the trailer, but anything that has her in a major role I will be sure to check out. I like the vibe of the trailer and think the matching of the classic hip hop track with the bungling robbery attempt is pretty hilarious. Let me know what you think of this one.
Troops, don’t forget to vote in this all important poll here, and check out the episode of the Forgotten Filmcast I appeared on last week.
