Trailer for your Weekend: Tusk
Kevin Smith is a divisive dude. He certainly has his acolytes and also his haters who will dismiss anything with his name on it. I am neither really, having only seen two of his films and liking but not loving both. Smith’s latest film Tusk (2014) looks to be a fair departure from his other work, even his first horror film Red State (2011). The trailer makes it look so batshit that it looks to be a fairly big departure from basically everything else. I have to say though, a horror film featuring a walrus feels all kinds of awesome to me. I just hope that it is treated somewhat seriously, because that is the tone I would prefer over something overtly jokey. Though I’m not sure how that desire will work out for me. Any thoughts on this trailer or Smith in general? Favourite films of his?

Trailer for your Weekend: Hot Tub Time Machine 2
Let’s face it, even if you enjoyed Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) like I sorta did, I don’t think too many were screaming out for Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2014). That said, this trailer actually has me kind of excited by the premise. Time travel films are always telling the audience the potential disastrous time space continuum knock on effects that time travel can bring. This film is actually going to explore that notion. Sure, I’m doubting it will be ‘hard sci-fi’ in its approach, but it is at least a somewhat novel approach to the plot. Though I have to say my initial enthusiasm wavered a fair bit when I realised John Cusack did not feel it worthwhile to come back for this. So I’m on the fence with this. Hopeful, but no Cusack sucks.

Trailer for your Weekend: Predestination
The Aussie Spierig Brothers have garnered a fair bit of acclaim for their first two genre flicks, Undead (2003) and Daybreakers (2009). Their latest effort Predestination (2014) will soon open the Melbourne International Film Festival with a wider release to follow. I haven’t seen their first two films, but I am definitely keen to check this one out in cinemas. I really like the imagery in the trailer, from the period flourishes to that initial image of Ethan Hawke exploding into glass. That’s an intriguing image and I can’t wait to see how that factors into the film as whole. I also really hope that this film breaks big, because the female lead Sarah Snook is a hell of a talent and deserves to be seen a whole lot more. Anyone happened to see the Spierig Brothers’ first couple of films?

Trailer for your Weekend: The Guest
Adam Wingard impressed many with You’re Next (2011), one of the most popular horror films of last year when it was finally released. I was also a big fan of his “Q is for Quack” segment in The ABCs of Death (2012). Wingard’s next film is The Guest (2014) which has been steadily building some buzz over recent times. This is only a very short first teaser, but it looks as though this will be a pretty atmospheric little film, with hints of the home invasion genre Wingard has mined before, even if it does not totally fit within the genre. Thoughts?

Trailer for your Weekend: Birdman
Look, I’m a sucker for an interesting/awesome song choice in a trailer. So this trailer for Birdman (2014) had me at the cover of Gnarls Barkley. But it doesn’t hurt that the director, cast and premise are all intriguing. It is rare these days for me to literally know nothing about a film before I catch the trailer, but I had never heard of this one at all. This trailer is definitely a teaser, with very few real details given on the film. But the taste that you get from it is that it is hopefully going to be uber cool and original. I am definitely looking forward to this one now. The poster is badass too.

Trailer for your Weekend: Dumb and Dumber To
There seems to be little middle ground in the reactions to this first Dumb and Dumber To (2014) trailer. People either outright hate it with a passion or seem ultra enthused with the humour contained. I think I fall into the rare middle ground. I loved the joke at the start explaining the time lapse between the first film and this one. But then it sort of regressed into solely consisting of jokes that were lifted unchanged from the first film. Oh and a truly crass sequence involving an elderly woman. I don’t mind the recycling of jokes, because you would expect those beats to reappear throughout the film. I just hope the Farellys haven’t lost sight of the rambunctious silliness that made the first such a classic for people around my age and don’t make just another crass comedy that are a dime a dozen these days. What do you all think about this one?

Trailer for your Weekend: Dinosaur 13
Trailer is rather late this week. However given it is a long weekend here, I am still technically posting this on the weekend. As a kid, I was a huge dinosaur geek. In fact I still am a bit of a dinosaur geek. Dinosaur 13 is an intriguing dinosaur related doco currently doing the rounds on the festival circuit. It looks at the discovery of Sue, the most complete T Rex skeleton ever found and the raft of issues that followed. Seems it is not always as simple as finders keepers. The film looks like it will be a great ride, from the beautiful settings to some pretty high drama. Any other big dinosaur fans who are hanging out for this one, or anyone managed to catch it at a festival already?

Trailer for your Weekend: Snowpiercer
A lot of people have been hanging out for Joon-ho Bong’s English language debut Snowpiercer (2013) for quite some time now. It played to a fair bit of hype in a couple of festivals quite a while ago. But the Weinsteins have gotten their hands on the film and have been making a lot of cuts to the final version. So even though it has opened in a bunch of countries over the past six months, places like Australia and the USA are still waiting. The concept sees a train circling the world continously in a near-future apocalypse. Tis a great concept and this red band trailer makes it look like a film to catch, tapping into classical sci-fi notions of class and power struggles, rocking a quality cast and looking mad pretty to boot. Hopefully the Weinsteins have gone easy on Bong’s original vision and we can actually see the film soon as well. You guys keen as I am for this, or have you even managed to catch the film?

Trailer for your Weekend: Life Itself
Unlike a lot of people, Roger Ebert was not my favourite film critic. I only read his work occasionally, finding it often insightful and often missing the point a little. But I, like everyone really must, totally respect Ebert and his position as the most popular critic of all time. He undoubtedly got more people interested in the art of cinema and challenged them to explore films that they otherwise would have passed by. Life Itself (2014) is a doco from big name director Steve James currently playing the festival circuit on Ebert’s life and work. From the awesome choice of opening quote from Ebert, to the breakdown of his sparring with Gene Siskel to the reveal of some of the great talking heads the film will include such as my man Werner Herzog, this is a film I really want to see. You guys keen for this too?

Trailer for your Weekend: Calvary
I was a huge, huge fan of The Guard (2011). It is one of those films that I really could not understand someone not loving. Calvary (2014) sees the director of that film John Michael McDonagh reuniting with awesome star Brendan Gleeson. Also along for the ride are a cracking cast including Chris O’Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Dylan Moran and Domhnall Gleeson. The film looks wonderful, like these guys will bring a dash of the boisterous from last time but really ramp up the thought provoking elements this time. Anyone else fans of The Guard and looking forward to this one too?
