Trailer for your Weekend: The Grand Budapest Hotel

budapest poster

Apologies for the slow week on the blog all. The day job has been hectic and I have had my old man around helping me do some work on the house as well.

Back in time for a weekend trailer as always. A new Wes Anderson film is always anticipated by many. I have not always really clicked with his films, but I really loved his most recent Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and as such was keener to see what he came up with next. This trailer makes me very excited indeed for the joys that The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) may well hold for us. For starters there is the cast which I was going to list but it’s too long. Think of a cool actor and then just assume they are in it.  Then there is what appears to be more of Anderson’s schtick, which can be delightful, consisting of a whimsical tone, incredible design (4:3 aspect ration anyone?) and shots composed down to the most minute of details. I think Anderson’s films work the best when there is a solid narrative drive to them and it looks  like this one has a reasonable level of plot to keep things moving along.

So all in all, I massively excited for this one. How about you guys? Also, what are your favourite films of Anderson’s? I need to go back and explore some of his earlier stuff.

Trailer for your Weekend: Neighbours

neighbours poster

This trailer for Neighbours , has to be one of the worst trailers I have seen in a long time. Seriously, if these are the best moments of the film it is going to be dire. Which is  a shame. Because even though the concept is achingly unoriginal, the cast is led by charismatic actors who I quite like in Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron. Who knows, maybe they can work magic and get this over the line.

Trailer for your Weekend: Gloria

gloria poster

Gloria  is a Chilean film that I have been hearing a fair bit about recently. It took out the top award at the Berlin Film Fest last year which is nothing to be sneezed at. Going off the trailer, small parts of it seem a little familiar, but it also seems to have a good spirit about it. I like the main character singing over the top of the images through the early parts. In particular, the main performance from Paulina Garcia looks really great and she has been getting a lot of plaudits for it too. Hopefully this manages to combine some familiar relationship film moments with some original stuff, and there is definitely a bit of that suggested. I will be keen to take a look when this opens later this month out here. Anyone out there seen this at a festival or somewhere it has already opened?

Trailer for your Weekend: Dom Hemingway

dom hemingway poster

Dom Hemingway is a film I have heard little bits about for a while now. It stars Jude Law as a bit of  a caricature of a safe cracker, finally out after being in jail for 12 years. The trailer looks pretty cool I think. The film seems to be taking an ultra stylised approach which if it comes off, could be something really special. Of course if it doesn’t come off, it could just be really annoying. Here is hoping for the former. What do you guys think?

Trailer for your Weekend: The Unknown Known

unknown known

Errol Morris is a huge name in documentary filmmaking. Whilst I would not say he is one of my personal favourites (I like rather than love his films), there is no doubting the respect that he is held in and the quality of his work. With the cracking title of The Unknown Known, Morris’ next film takes a look at one of the more divisive figures of the last 15 or so years, Donald Rumsfeld. You have to wonder sometimes how Morris gets his subjects to be involved. Just look at the befuddled (and befuddling) Rummy Rumsfeld reading the first memo in the trailer. The trailer has definitely whet my appetite to check out more of this and how Rummy comes off. Docos on political figures are probably not for everyone, but are you guys interested in this?

Trailer for your Weekend: Grand Piano

Piano poster

I first heard about Grand Piano on Rhinos Horror’s most anticipated horror films of 2014 list and was immediately intrigued by the premise. It sees Elijah Wood (really embracing this horror thing aye) star as a concert pianist who sits down to play a show, only to find a death threat scrawled on his music – “play one wrong note and you die”. The trailer is really cool and makes me even more keen to check this one out.

From the close-up of the gun, the setting up of Wood’s character as one who has struggled with nerves in the past to the laser sight on his music, this is one of those trailers which gives you just enough to really get you excited, but no more (with the possible exception that it does give away who the bad guy is played by). What do you guys think?

Trailer for your Weekend: Edge of Tomorrow

EOT poster

We all know you can’t judge a film by its trailer. Hopefully for the makers of Edge of Tomorrow, that proves accurate in this case. Starring Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise, this film is aiming to be a big budget breakout film this year. And whilst there is a lot of potential in the cast and plot, I am not a fan of what they have chosen to show us in this trailer. Whilst I think the music choices made throughout are pretty gnarly, I don’t like the convoluted conveying of the narrative. Not a good sign when the story is confusing in the trailer. The other issue is whether the film will be differentiating it from other similar films of recent years. There are hints of Source Code (2011), Elysium (2013) and perhaps even Pacific Rim (2013) in the trailer and those marketing the film would be wise to start showing some truly original content to potential attendees of the film. What do you guys think about this one?

Trailer for your Weekend: Transcendence

Transcendence poster

Could it be? Could Johnny Depp actually deliver a performance where he doesn’t just play Johnny Depp? This first trailer for Transcendence gives us some hope I think. I’m not sure if others have been tracking this film for a while, but I only really became aware of it the other day when I caught the trailer. And I’ve got to say it looks pretty badarse. Here is hoping for some intelligent but not too confusing sci-fi goodness. With a Johnny Depp in fine form challenging himself rather than just playing a caricature of himself. You guys psyched at all for this?

Trailer for your Weekend: Interstellar

untitled

Here is this week’s trailer. Albeit a little later than usual, so apologies for that. Also the ongoing neglect of everyone else’s blogs as I travel and fight crappy internet connections.

I am not all that familiar with Christopher Nolan’s non-Dark Knight work. But this trailer has me pretty excited. It looks like Terrence Malick has made a sci-fi flick. And if the end product turns out anything like that, this will be one hell of a film. Not to mention it has Matthew McConaughey who has managed to go from laughing stock to one of the most reliable actors in the world in remarkable time. What do you guys think of this one?

Trailer for your Weekend: Godzilla

godzilla poster

As a massive fan of Monsters (2010), I think that if anyone is capable of making a decent Godzilla film in this day and age, it is director Gareth Edwards. When you think about it, the story is not an easy one to transfer to a contemporary sensibility. But here is hoping this is a really great big scary monster flick. I like this trailer, even though there is a fair bit of shared ground with the latest Captain America effort. It doesn’t ruin anything and gets me excited for the scope that Edwards is going to bring to the screen. Godzilla is definitely one of my most anticipated films for next year.
