Trailer for your Weekend: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

mitty poster

I know this trailer has been out and about for ages now, but I haven’t shared it as yet and to be honest there is nothing new out there particularly grabbing me. This has been playing in front of a bunch of the films I have seen recently and I really dig it.  It looks like the film could combine fun, whinsy and a little dramatic weight in an original way. I have no idea if Stiller will be able to pull it off. But given it is not a franchise/adaptation film and is getting a rare prime release slot (Boxing Day in Aus), twould be good if this turned out worthwhile. What do you guys think of it?

Trailer for your Weekend: Noah

Noah-Poster

You know whatever the state of your belief or disbelief, the tale of Noah and the ark could make for a badass film – dude with a beard faces apocalyptic floods on a wooden boat containing every species on earth. That’s rocking. With an really intriguing director, Russell Crowe as star and that killer poster above, Noah could be great stuff. However there has already been murmurings that the final cut of the film will be highly geared toward fundamental US Christian audiences. And if that is the case, it will make the target audience for the final film very narrow.

This trailer, quite frankly, looks terrible. Aside from the fact that Rusty looks totally killer with a beard and a buzzcut.  I really hope I am wrong and we get a film that is fun and engaging for the everyday filmgoer. But I am not so sure. What do you guys think?

Trailer for your Weekend: Captain America The Winter Soldier

Cap poster

Woah just realised I completely forgot to post a trailer for this weekend, as mine winds down with a beer. Here is the trailer for next year’s second Marvel Captain America film. Have to say I was a real fan of the approach that Marvel took with the first, making it essentially a period piece. With Cap now in the present day, it will be interesting to see how this standalone film holds up without that hook.

The trailer is promising enough though. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow appears to be along for the ride not to mention Robert Redford doing something or other rather businesslike. There also appears to be some interesting plot points about Cap adjusting to the modern world of preemptive strikes. I will be definitely keen to check this one out as soon as it opens next year.

Trailer for your Weekend: The Raid 2: Berandal

raid 2 poster

One of the biggest surprise hits of recent years was action flick The Raid. Coming out of Indonesia, the film was loved by basically everyone (including me). A sequel is on the way, and here is the first teaser trailer.

I have to say I really quite like it.Like so many trailers it basically goes down the montage route. But I love the visual of the guy punching the snot out of the outline of a dude on his prison wall. I think it takes what would be a stock standard montagey trailer, and makes it a fair bit more interesting. Release dates are still up in the air, but there is talk of a March-ish release here in Aus, so it will probably be vaguely around there. You psyched for it?

Trailer for your Weekend: X-Men: Days of Future Past

x men poster

I was quite a fan of X-Men First Class and appreciated the approach it took to rebooting a franchise whilst not really rebooting it at all. As such, I am pretty excited by this trailer for X-Men Days of Future Past which continues things on, whilst also crossing over with the original series of films. I think it is to be applauded that a big studio picture is going for this, because it could confuse some movie goers, the combo of the two series. This trailer does not give too much away (which is bloody nice) but it does make the film look pretty slick and awesome. I am really psyched for this film and this trailer has only added to that.

A Fortnight of Terror Trailer for your Weekend: I Frankenstein

I-Frankenstein poster

This week’s trailer is for I Frankenstein, a forthcoming film which I think is based on a pretty well received graphic novel. The film was shot in Australia as well, so got a fair bit of press out here. A shame then that this trailer makes it look like utter shite. It has more than a whiff of Van Helsing about it, which you know is not  a good thing at all. Aside from Aaron Eckhart looking the goods, there is basically nothing here that gives any hope this film will be worth your time.

Anyone disagree with me on this?

A Fortnight of Terror Trailer for your Weekend: Patrick

patrick-poster

In a strange way, I really wish that I was not sharing this trailer this week. Patrick, a remake of an Ozploitation classic from 1978 opened this week so I was going to check it out and review it. Inexplicably though, the film is not showing in any of Canberra’s cinemas. So I will have to make do with the trailer. The original is perhaps the most famous of the iconic range of classic Australian genre films made famous by the documentary Not Quite Hollywood, a film which got a lot of impetus from having a gushing Tarantino as one of the interview subjects.Ironically, that film did exceptionally well here, but audiences continually shun new and fantastic Aussie genre films.

The director of Not Quite Hollywood Mark Hartley is actually the director of this film in what I believe is his fiction debut.  Sharni Vinson, who has burst on to the international scene this year with You’re Next is one of the stars, joined by some quality Aussie actors such as Rachel Griffiths and Damon Gameau. Overall I think the trailer looks promising and the film, whilst perhaps not doing anything too hugely innovative, should hopefully be a slice of genre fun. It looks decidedly atmospheric that’s for sure. Just a shame then that I will have to wait until I can catch it on blu-ray to confirm.

What do you dudes think of the trailer?

Trailer for your Weekend: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Smaug

Somewhat controversially, Peter Jackson’s first Hobbit film was my least favourite of last year. Says a lot about him as a filmmaker and my love for his Lord of the Rings films that when a mate told me that there was a trailer up for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, I felt the need to check it out ASAP.

My verdict? I’m just not sure. I really want it to be amazing. I still have this horrid fear that it will be bloated and plainly drawn out far too long. I definitely won’t be seeing it in the turgid 48 FPS that Jackson seems to love, but even so, the visuals look a little cartoonish just in this trailer. Let’s hope Jackson gets it right this time though. The teaser of Smaug in this trailer definitely leaves me wanting more.

The Cinema of Japan Trailer for your Weekend: Shield of Straw

straw-shield-poster

Of all the directors featured this week, Takashi Miike is one who is still working relatively prolifically. So I thought it might be good to feature his upcoming (or recently released depending on where you live) film as this week’s trailer.

Shield of Straw (or Straw Shield depending on who you ask) looks like some pretty violent and stylish Miike fare focusing on the cop genre. Unfortunately I could not find a trailer with English subtitles, but just from the visuals, this looks like one that I wouldn’t mind catching. What do you guys think?

This week thanks to Madman Entertainment, you have the chance to win a copy of Ace Attorney, Black Belt plus one other Japanese film on DVD. Head here for all the details on how to enter.

Trailer for your Weekend: Need for Speed

need_for_speed_movie_poster_by_dcomp-d5i1ys3

On the face of things, Need for Speed, an adaptation of the computer game of the same name seems like a pretty daft idea for a movie. I think this trailer supports that suspicion rather well by being pretty daft. No doubt the film will have a decent sized ready made audience in fans of the computer game series and people that would go and see that dude from Breaking Bad in just about anything. But I am not so sure that I will make the effort to catch this one.
