My Christmas Viewing Plans
A very Merry Christmas to all of you out there. I hope that whatever the season means to you and yours, it is filled with family, companionship and most importantly beer.
I am travelling interstate over the period (have been doing so for the best part of a couple of weeks actually) and will be spending the festive season in Victoria. Firstly in Beechworth with my fiancée’s family and then in Melbourne with (most) of my family.
One of the family traditions we have in my family is a movie or two on Christmas night. I have wrested control of the film choices away from my mother this year. I love my mother dearly, but she has a chequered history in terms of Christmas movie choices. Trailers for my two choices which I have specially bought brand spanking new blu-rays of are below. The first is, I think, universally regarded as a Chrissy classic. The second is in my opinion probably the most underrated adaptation of Dickens’ iconic A Christmas Carol.
Do you and yours have any Christmas movie traditions?

Trailer for your Weekend: Monsters Dark Continent
So it turns out Monsters (2010) is getting a sequel in the form of Monsters: Dark Continent. Who knew? Definitely not me until this news exploded across my computer screen earlier this week. I was a big fan of the first film, I ranked it number three in my Top five list for 2010. But it was a pretty divisive film, and I know there are plenty of people out there who did not dig it at all. For me though, I am absolutely psyched for this. That one image in this trailer of one of the huge creatures being carried in a big coal truck has absolutely sold me. Can’t wait!

Trailer for your Weekend: R.I.P.D.
A little late with this, but better late then never I guess. R.I.P.D is apparently already out in the states, though it mustn’t be making many waves because I have not really seen any reviews doing the rounds. The trailer looks like it could be a pretty clever ride and it has some pretty interesting people involved – Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds and the awesome Mary Louise Parker. It does also look like it has a tone that could definitely go either way. Has anyone seen this already and care to share their thoughts?

Trailer for your Weekend: Thor: The Dark World
Thor was one of the less well received of the first cycle of Marvel films. Whilst it had issues, I thought it was a pretty interesting flick. The sequel will be hitting screens this year, and this trailer suggests plenty of intrigue coming our way. It is one of the few trailers where the voiceover works and the whole thing has me pretty keen to see the end product.

Trailer for your Weekend: The Place Beyond the Pines
It’s pretty much impossible not to be on the Ryan Gosling bandwagon these days. What with him being utterly dreamy, as well as rocking it in films like Drive. The trailer for The Place Beyond the Pines manages to cram a whole lot in. The Gosling/Mendes plotline looks pretty interesting, if a little familiar. Hopefully it can be combined with the other elements, because this could be pretty fantastic. Thoughts?

Trailer for your Weekend: Generation Um…
I’m not as big a Keanu hater as many people. Maybe I love Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure to completely dismiss him. But that is not the reason that this trailer caught my eye. Rather it is the presence of Bojana Novakovic who was so exceptional in Burning Man, one of my favourite Australian films, as well as in Not Suitable for Children and The King is Dead.
The trailer itself looks utterly bloody terrible, making the film out to look pretentious and uber annoying. Anyone care to disagree, or can we all agree this looks woeful?

Trailer for your Weekend: It’s A Disaster
Apocalypse comedies are all of a sudden a dime a dozen. This one has flown under the radar a little, not being pushed by names such as Carrell, Rogen and Penn/Frost. The trailer is promising though, nicely captruing the awkwardness of being the new boyriend at a dinner party. It may not be as over the top as some of the other entries in this subgenre, but I think this has a fair bit of promise. Always good to see Julia Stiles onscreen as well. What do you guys think of this?

Trailer for your Weekend: Now You See Me
Magician movies (I’m not so sure that is a legit genre) can be pretty hit and miss. Now You See Me is a forthcoming entry into the sorta-genre that I remain a little unsure about. It has some cool heist elements to it, but could also be a little too all over the shop. It also looks like it will be yet another film labouring the OWS/99% themes which is a pet gripe of mine (not saying I am anti either of those things, they are just generally dealt with extremely superficially on screen).
What do you guys think?

Trailer for your weekend: Monsters University
Here is a trailer that has me really excited. Monsters University is a prequel to my absolute favourite Pixar film Monsters Inc. The film is not due out til next year, so it really is just a teaser. But this has whetted my appetite for the film even more. You guys looking forward to Monsters University?
