You guys are all apparently fans of Indiana Jones. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) was one of the three 1001 films that you chose for me to live tweet and until recently the franchise was equal leading the poll for what franchise to review next. Here is my tweet review, hope you enjoy. Aiming to get around to tweeting the other two that you voted for ASAP.
About to do a little 1001 live tweet. INDIANA JONES AND THE RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK coming your way. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Please note I am tweeting this utterly sober. That's my excuse if my usual searing wit and insight is lacking. #indytweet

Indy theme surely top 5/10 all time? Bond, HALLOWEEN, JAWS. What else is up there? GREAT ESCAPE. That's my off top of head list #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Immediately know you are in good hands with Spielberg. Such a deft touch. Why are adventure films so hard for others to get right #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
So many aspects of this film are 'all time'. Theme, director, central character, set pieces, Alfred Molina. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Film ain't great for my arachnophobia though. Being an aussie who hates spiders sucks. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
The sequence that ends with the boulder tells you everything you need to know about this film. I.e. awesome, awesome fun #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
I'm not too fond of snakes either by the way. But as far as I'm aware my garage is not crawling with them. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Focus on Christian artifacts in these films is interesting. Not sure if meaningful in any way, but interesting nonetheless. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
I guess some of these artifacts are imbued with the biblical power ascribed to them. The power of God as Indy puts it. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
This live tweet has gotten mad serious. Bloody hell I need a beer. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Add design to the list of things this film does brilliantly. The maps. The sets. Costumes. Locations. All of it. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Ronald Lacey is chilling in this film. Wonder why I never saw him in more stuff. Has Bond villain written all over him. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
The way Marion is incorporated into the storyline is really clever. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Ah John Rhys-Davies. There is someone I saw more of. An absolute legend. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is one of my favourite Bond flicks #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Why in the hell didn't you tell me John Rhys-Davies was Gimli ?!?!? Why in the hell hadn't I worked that out myself ?!?!? #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Beloc and Indy have a real Joker/Batman thing going on. One the shadowy bastard version of the other. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Spielberg and Hitchcock are the only two contenders for the title of greatest mainstream/populist filmmaker ever. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Those two are incredibly different though. But their ability to creat tension (albeit in totally different ways) is a commonality #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Not even the greatness of Spielberg can escape woeful 80s special effects though. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Indy & Marion's relationship is the script's best aspect. The moment where he elects not to rescue her from the Nazis is ace #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
You can quibble with some aspects of this film. But it is undoubtably one of the very best adventure flicks ever, #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Erm, is Marion wearing a wedding dress with a huge rose on the butt? Wonder if my fiancee would like that. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Heh. That nunchucks into coat hanger bit is a terrible joke. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
If you had to level one criticism of the film, it does slow a touch through the middle. But that is being pretty picky. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
This fight scene culminating in the head into the propellor is the bit I recall most from childhood viewings #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Film descends awesomely into a succession of chases and set-pieces. Great action packed stuff #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Can't see a man going underneath a truck without thinking about STAGECOACH (my favourite Western BTW if you've never seen) #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Indy is a very cool and calm hero. Sort of like James Bond but much more uncouth. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Isn't the Nazis believing the Ark to be of immense power a little ironic? #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
I never loved this end sequence (face melting aside of course). Thought it was silly to inject magic into the film. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
But it works a lot better from the perspective of it being some manifestation of God's power. Had not thought about it that way #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Effects are still utterly rubbish though. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Oh man that last shot! Just crying out for an awesome TV or comic book follow-up series. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
A great film. Perhaps no JAWS or JURASSIC PARK for me. But yet more evidence Spielberg is one of the greatest. #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Verdict: Pint of Kilkenny #indytweet
— Tim @ Beermovie.net (@beer_movie) March 2, 2014
Progress: 101/1001 2014 Progress: 5/101 #indytweet

Nicely done Tim! Amazing movie and amazing live tweet!
Thankyou sir, glad you enjoyed this.
Well done! Good stuff man! I do love “Raiders”. And if you will allow me to totally date myself, I remember seeing it in the theater during its first run as a kid. I left the theater cracking a fake whip and for months and months after I was backyard Indiana Jones!
That’s awesome that it had such an effect on you. Adventure films tend to do that, but they are really quite rare when you think about it.
“Why in the hell didn’t you tell me John Rhys-Davies was Gimli ?!?!? Why in the hell hadn’t I worked that out myself ?!?!?” – LOL welcome to the party!
I freaking LOVE the Indiana Jones movie, great live Tweet man!
Cheers Zoe. Yep, this is a great film from a really good series.
Superb stuff mate, love this film, although probably my least favourite of the three originals.
Excellent stuff mate. What a fantastic way to structure a review. I’ve just recently reviewed this film myself but I won’t be posting it until I’ve written about the first three and then I’ll post one a day in quick succession.
EPIC!!
Awesome post. Loved this live-tweet review! Keep ’em comin’ 🙂
I’m thats funny, I just rewatched this myself. You are right about the villain making a good Bond villain.
Thanks for commenting man. Are you a big fan of the series?
