Tom Hanks is an easy guy to hate on, but I really don’t mind him. He has been in some pretty rubbish films, but I think they are rarely his fault. So personally I am interested to see him in Captain Phillips, especially given the based on fact narrative and that Paul Greengrass is directing. Greengrass is not particularly prolific but is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today. I definitely think that Greengrass has the potential to elevate what could be somewhat average material with his approach. Check out the second trailer for Captain Phillips below.

Look at me, I’m the captain now. I love that line, so terrifying and terrifically acted.
I know, looks pretty intense aye.
Very much looking forward to this, it looks tense and gripping. I know nothing of Greengrass, but based on what you say, I’m more excited now. Love that second trailer
Yeah he is an interesting director. United 93 is I think the best of his films. A really intense watch. Outside of that, I quite like his Bourne films (though perhaps not as much as some people) and Green Zone (I probably like that one more than most people).
This movie looks great; can’t wait to see it! 🙂
Nice post, Tim. I just read somewhere that Tom Hanks is rated #1 actor of all time. He’s certainly iconic–don’t know if I’d rate him in the number one spot–Christian Bale or D.D. Lewis is better–anyhow, I don’t know much about Greengrass so this is all refreshing news for me.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Hanks was the #1 box office actor of all time. Whilst I like him though, he wouldn’t be at the top of any ‘best actor’ list I put together either.
Me, either. Right now, Christian Bale is my favorite working actor. Well, shit. Daniel Day Lewis, I guess all-time.
